Unlike most states known for their cities and major metropolitan areas, Vermont is known for its sense of community, its scenic villages and small towns. It's where the center of the community is the independently-owned general store or the post office. Jay Hathaway, owner of Peltier's Market in Dorset, called these much-visited stores and markets "the beating hearts of our villages" because it's where locals go for a quart of milk, a sandwich, the newspaper and other daily essentials. ItŐs where "everybody knows your nameÉ"
Bennington County consists of several towns, each with its own history and individuality. In the southern part of the county are Bennington, North Bennington, Stamford, Readsboro, Pownal, Woodford and Shaftsbury. Further north are Arlington, Dorset, Landgrove, Manchester, Peru, Rupert, Sandgate, Sunderland and Winhall. For a genuine look into the heart of Southern Vermont's towns and villages visit one of the locally-owned general stores or markets.
It's a step back in time... and a tradition we aim to preserve.
